Two men are dead and their families traumatised following a head-on crash by two trucks on the Hume Highway south of Holbrook.
Police have identified the deceased in the north bound truck as Brett Fitzgerald, aged 37 years of Hoppers Crossing, Victoria.
The south bound driver has not been positively identified.
At about 1.15am on Friday 15 January, two prime-movers collided on the highway, one kilometre south of the town of Woomargama, NSW.
Both drivers of the trucks died at the scene.
The north bound semitrailer is believed to have crossed over to the wrong side of the road on a single lane section of the highway only five kilometres away from the dual highway.
In the next two years, a four-lane highway will be constructed across farmland in a north-easterly direction, bypassing Woomargama and replacing this section of the highway.
While fatigue is believed to have been a factor, the double fatality has prompted a spokesman for the trucking industry to call on improved signage at this section of the highway and generally, more rest areas for trucks.
“It’s only five kilometres from the dual - it’s confusing and there is not enough signage indicating single lanes,” he said.
The Hume Highway was closed in both directions for most of the day.
North bound traffic was diverted on the Olympic Highway via Wagga and southbound traffic at Holbrook to Culcairn and then the Olympic Highway.
Investigations into the circumstances surrounding the incident continue and police will prepare a report for the information of the Coroner.
