Trashing plastic bags

A number of local supermarkets are gauging customer support before taking the final step to phase out the use of plastic bags.

The issue arose as the Australian Government Environmental Minister Peter Garrett considers a plan to ban plastic shopping bags by the end of 2008.

Culcairn Foodworks owners hope to persuade customers to use alternate bags by charging five cents per plastic bag.

“We won’t make money out of this, it will be donated to a local charity - the Culcairn Early Childhood Centre,” Todd Miller said.

“Out with the old and in with the new which is the old way of shopping when customers used their own woven bags.”
