The Way of the Cross

06 Mar, 2008 07:20 AM
The Olympic Torch of World Youth Day arrived in Holbrook on Wednesday, the first place in its journey through the Diocese of Wagga Wagga.

The World Youth Day Cross and Icon of Our lady had been handed over at the summit of Mount Koscuisko earlier in the day.

Archbishop Mark Coleridge from the Canberra Goulburn and Bishop Gerard Hanna from the Wagga Wagga Diocese were present as the procession reached the summit.

Some “300 pilgrims beheld the cross at Mount Kosciuszko and this is a very tangible expression of faith,” Bishop Hanna said.

“So the cross has arrived in Holbrook, the first parish to host the cross in the Wagga Wagga Diocese.”

“It is fitting we venerate the Cross in the context of celebrations of our youth,” Bishop Hanna said.

Viewed as a symbol of their redemption, the Cross and Icon will travel to Riverina communities March 6.

Local parishioners and schools have organised their own activities with the Cross and accompanying Icon of Our Lady.
