Medals on Display

16 Dec, 2009 07:24 AM
Commander Norman Holbrook’s Victoria Cross and medals were unveiled at the Australian War Memorial on Friday.

His medals were made available, on loan from the Greater Hume Shire Council on behalf of the community of Holbrook, NSW.

Formerly known as Germanton, the town adopted Holbrook’s name as its own during World War I.

Greater Hume Shire Mayor Denise Osborne, school children and representatives from council and the community met with War Memorial Director Steve Gower at the unveiling in the First World War Gallery.

“To link one’s community to a name takes considerable thought - the name has to have strength, instil pride and portray the ideals of the community it will house,” Cr Osborne said.

Norman Douglas Holbrook VC was a naval officer and winner of the Victoria Cross, the highest and most prestigious award for gallantry in the face of the enemy that can be awarded to British and Commonwealth forces.

Commander Holbrook and the crew of the B11 submarine penetrated the Dardanelles, remained submerged for nine hours evading gunfire and five rows of mines. They successfully sank the Turkish gun ship the Messudiyeh before returning safely. Holbrook’s actions inspire others to enter the Dardanelles including the Australian Navy’s submarine AE2.

The Late Commander Norman Holbrook and his wife Gundula Holbrook became enormous supporters of the town and community of Holbrook.

Commander Holbrook’s Victoria Cross and other medals donated in 1982 are strongly linked to the town and the shire as a whole.

Cr Osborne drew attention to the decision to place Holbrook’s medals in the custody of the Australian War Memorial.

“It illustrates the importance we place on ensuring the legacy of the man and recognition of his actions are shared wider afield,” she said.

Mrs Holbrook who was unable to make the trip to Australia, continues to hold a strong interest in Holbrook.

“Her generosity has allowed many community projects become a reality,” Cr Osborne said.

Mrs Holbrook was represented at the event by friends Jenny Farrell and Jane and Roger Waters.
