After campaigning for more than 15 years for another doctor to come to his practice, Dr Lakshmanan has welcomed Dr Jane Russell from the Royal Flying Doctors Service who will be running a two day clinic in Holbrook every eight weeks.
Dr Russell is part of the Rural Women’s GP Service which is fully funded by the Commonwealth Government and was established in May 2000 to cater for women in regional and remote areas who have no access to female doctors.
Dr Russell lives in Melbourne and travels to Holbrook, Tumbarumba and Tallangatta to conduct the Rural Women’s GP Service.
She has been working as a General Practitioner for 23 years, and over the years has come to specialise in women’s health and obstetrics.
The Rural Women’s GP service started 11 years ago but Dr Russell has been travelling to outlying communities to do this important work for around 15 years.
By being at the Holbrook practice Dr Russell will, in some cases, be removing the need for women to travel to Albury or Wagga for their appointments.
Dr Lakshmanan is pleased to have Dr Russell at his practice, “We are very relieved to finally have the service here after first approaching the Royal Flying Doctors two years ago.”
The service is confidential, free of charge and available to anyone with a Medicare card.
