Daryl Maguire launches Drought Survival Guide

08 Jan, 2003 12:44 PM
Member for Wagga Wagga, Mr Daryl Maguire, has launched a special 'Survival Guide' to help the community through the drought crisis.

The eight-page booklet has been issued to households throughout the Wagga Wagga Electorate.

The booklet has three main aims, according to Mr Maguire.

"It explains the drought so the wider community can understand the severity of the big dry," Mr Maguire said.

"It provides information on assistance measures available and how to access relief. The booklet also gives some handy hints on how to save that most precious of resources...water."

Mr Maguire said the whole community, both locally and nationally, had rallied to help those most affected by the drought.

"Those suffering the heartbreak of crop loss, starving stock and all the associated problems have the support of not just rural people, but everybody who cares about the future of this country," Mr Maguire said.

Some of the Wagga Wagga division of the Rural Lands Protection Board was officially drought declared as early as June 1.

The City received just 0.4 millimetres of rain in October, the lowest ever for the month since records were first kept in 1898.

"We have toughed it out through droughts before and better seasons lie ahead," Mr Maguire said.

"This booklet provides valuable information to help those who may not know where to turn."

Mr Maguire said there were a number of options available to those who were drought-affected.

"There have been government-sponsored and community-based initiatives set up to help people through this difficult time," Mr Maguire said.

"I urge people to contact the support networks they feel which are most appropriate to their circumstances."

The 'Survival Guide' contains numbers, websites and a host of other important information pertaining to the drought.

Additional copies will be available from Mr Maguire's office in Morgan Street, Wagga, or by telephoning 69211622.
