Windsor runs into arms of likely loser Gillard

Windsor runs into arms of likely loser Gillard

Julia Gillard will lead the new minority government not because she is in the stronger position but because at least one independent thinks she is in the weaker.

It was a strikingly candid remark from the Member for New England, Tony Windsor, whose support for Labor will give Gillard the barest possible majority – 76 seats in a 150-seat chamber – to Tony Abbott's 74.

In announcing his decision, Windsor told a press conference this afternoon that he had decided to support Labor because it was more likely to allow the Partliament to run a full three year term.

The Coalition, he said, was more likely to run to a new election as soon as possible.

Asked why he thought so, Windsor replied: “Because I think they would be more likely to win.”

Labor, however, is “more likely to be here for a longer period of time.”

The longevity of the new government, he added, was “key” to his decision.

In other words, Windsor has chosen deliberately to side with the party that he thinks is less likely to win the support of the Australian people at another election.

Asked specifically if this were the case, he replied: “That's my call.”

And it was also the call of many Coalition backbenchers, he added.

This lays bare the calculus of self-interest.

On his own confession, Windsor is prepared to deny the Australian people the government of their choice so long as he can prolong his own position of extraordinary leverage in holding the balance of power.

Windsor was just as blunt in his analysis of how he is exploiting the position that electoral fortune has granted him.

Under both Labor and Coalition governments, he said, country people were “always sidelined.”

No longer: “This is about using the political system to the advantage of the people we represent,” said Windsor.

And so it is. Gillard has offered the independents a “regional package” with a prima facie price tag of $10 billion.

Almost immediately, Gillard publicly declared that the next allocations of funding for hospitals and education would give priority to the regions.

One of the other independents holding the balance of power, Rob Oakeshott, in declaring that he, too, would support a Gillard government, said that “no one living in the city needs to be scared – we are looking for equity” for country people.

On policy matters, Windsor and Oakeshott cited two in common as top priorities in deciding which party to support – Labor's national broadband plan, and its position on climate change.

Oakeshott agreed with Windsor that he believed Labor was less interested in going to the polls quickly. And stability was vital to him, he said.

He disagreed with Windsor's reasoning – that it was because the Coalition was more likely to win.

But the inescapable conclusion from Windsor's remarks is that Gillard will be prime minster because she is more likely to be dependent on the crossbenchers.

Like a lover seeking an emotionally needy partner, this pair of independents has found happiness in a dependent government.

There is only one word to describe Tony Windsor. TRAITOR. He will not stand for the next election and therefore the Tamworth people will not have the privilege of voting him out of office

I hope you good people of New England dump Tony Windsor at the next election. A man who puts his own self interest before the will of the people does not deserve your support. Go to it good people !

I am not surprised that Oakeshott went for Labor. The guy is a total lightweight and was swayed by Windsor who has already been thinking retirement. Oakeshott might get a pension when he retires but he will not be re elected in Lyne. A most undemocratic outcome.

You better be looking for a new job within the next three years because your voters are so angry they will make you redundant. Shame on you Tony, maybe you could start digging the ditches for the new unaffordable broadband network that you so proudly supported. You are a fool and I trusted you and gave you my vote. Never again - Traitor

For the past few weeks we have heard over and over again from both major parties that we have entered a new era in Australian politics. So why is it that Abbott is still working in the ‘dark ages’? It has been a long time, if in fact it has ever happened, since the Liberals have out polled and got more seats than the Labor party in any election. The Liberals have over the decades claimed Government on the back of a coalition with the Country party by its various machinations. Now in this new era of Australian politics there is a new non-conservative coalition, which has claimed Government. I see no difference to what happened yesterday than what the Liberals have been doing for decades. The only problem is that Abbott is still working on the right to rule and that it is okay for him to have a coalition, but not alright for any other party. And to the moaners from Lyne and New England, who wanted a Liberal conservative coalition government, stiff bickies, you should have voted that way instead of voting Independent

All you fools who complain about independents siding with labour are morons, they left the national party so why the hell would they support them once more, you voted for an independent, if you wanted the coalition to win the election, why didn't you vote for them instead, seems to me the only traitors here are you idiots complaining about a independent you voted for who can vote on anything any party wants to do, instead of being locked with the national party who has been the liberals scape goat for years & never gets a thing from them in return even when in Government, we are stuck with John Cobb here in Calare, so you really should all think yourselves lucky, our member gets nothing for us & never will seeing he is a national party sheep.

Personally I applaud Rob. It was a hard call, they did the research and I believe the outcome is the best for Lyne. If those who are upset with Rob that he didn't go wit the coalition, there was David Gillespie as an alternative. He has done what a good Independent should do, weighed up the options and got the best deal. If others want a party line, then vote for a party and see what we don't get

People who voted for Mr Windsor or Mr Oakeshott and are now outraged seem to have forgotten that they voted for an INDEPENDENT. Regardless of their "roots" these men chose to leave their party and stand as independents, meaning exactly that. They are independent. If you had wanted a National or Liberal member you should have supported one. The people of New England and Lyne seem to be more concerned about the colour of the representation rather than the quality of it. Both MPs have an incredible opportunity to bring about great improvement in Federal politics and to regional areas. Remember, also, that these men were making "deals" with both sides of politics. They were going to be in the same position regardless of whom they supported. Why don't you all just wait and see what kind of results your re-elected MPs garner for you and your region and then decide in three years whether to trash them or not. Really it's no wonder country people are seen as such a parochial bunch.
